Orange Candy Slices and Other Secret Tales

Exploring and Celebrating a Different Way of Life
What a great book! It paints Hispanic life in the Rio Grande Valley from the viewpoint of a child. What would ordinarily appear strange to an outsider becomes natural and mystical through the narrator's eyes. This doubleness of vision makes the stories remarkable indeed. They led me into a culture very different from my own--one where everyday life is governed by different rhythms and different values. Family and community anchor all. And in the simple rituals of food and of death, joy and reaffirmation of life is found.

crackles with wit
These stories crackle with wit. Written cleanly, with no excess verbiage, this book grabbed me and led me to a place I'd like to know. The skill of the author impresses me, suggesting as it does an intelligent perspective on spirituality, America, individuality, and social alienation. The flavor of a Texas I have not seen stirred my curiosity, while references to the Virgin Mary resonated with my own sense of wonder. As a worthwhile distraction from life's little blisters, I have already recommended these stories to friends.

Orange Candy Slices and Other Secret Tales
A superb collection of short stories that capture the essence of the Hispanic culture. The author does an exceptional job in bringing these traditions to all your senses. One can taste the bread in The Panaderia, feel the prickly thorns in Nopalitos, see the vibrant colored houses in The Bubble Gum Pink House, smell the aroma of cafe de olla in The Carousel and hear the girl's dancing feet in The Polka Dot Dress. I can't wait for her next book!

Sing Your Own Song: A Guide for Single Moms

What Every Mother Needs to Know
I wish someone had given me this book when I was raising my children. Although I was not a single mother, the wise advice to be gentle with yourself and take care of yourself are issues for every mother trying to balance many demands in her life. The practical pointers on parenting, rethinking family and creating community are useful for all parents. This wisdom is delivered with warm support, compassion and gentleness. It feels like a hug from the mother/grandmother we all wish we had.

I have also worked with single mothers who struggled under a great deal of stress. They would have found this book a welcome resource for making decisions, solving problems, finding support, developing confidence and building relationships.

One Afternoon In An Italian Restaurant
My waitress saw me reading the book and introduced herself as a single mom. When I told her what it was about - taking care of yourself - she got tears in her eyes. She began telling me of her week. She had two little boys and a hectic schedule. "Could this have been written for me?" Yes, it was, and is written for all single mothers. I applaud the author. Her sensitivity and heart-felt honesty laced with humor, make this helpful tool a must read for all parents.

Sing Your Own Song
Every single mother struggling to affirm the validity of a single parent family should make this a "must read". The author includes personal and humorous anecdotes as well as suggestions and illustrations from professionals who deal with children and mothers in one parent families. I particularly found the sections dealing with children in schools helpful and practical. Extending the book to today's realities of caring for aging parents adds an interesting dimension. The myth of the "Beaver Cleaver" family is dissolved, and in it's place, author Cynthia Orange creatively paints a picture of a positive and healthy family made up of a mother and her children.

The Story of Orange is a great learning expiriance for all ages. The author is a former teacher who just loves children and drama. She has put on sevral prodution and each one has been wonderful. I've been a cast member in two of the shows. It's the perfect thing for anyonre to see. It helps build self-estime. The book is a hooking and the fun thing is everyone can read it!

exciting and fun!
I was so excited when I saw this book here! I have had this book for many years and have read it often in many settings. I was able to see one of first productions of the book. My son at the time was only 2.5 years old now 14 years later he STILL TALKS ABOUT IT! As a therapist I have read this book to many children and always recommend it to parents! Childrens self esteem, and creative expression is vital for healthy development. This book does it ALL, even "grown ups" get a boost from the material! Everyone LOVES the STORY OF ORANGE.

Important Messages for Children
The Story of Orange is a fabulous book because of what it teacher children. All adults can remember a time when they suffered put downs as children. This sad saga continues today, with maybe even an increase. In this book, Orange (a zebra with orange stripes) gets down on himself because the new children in You Are, the Averaj children, put down his painting as, "Scribble Scrabble." He takes their taunts to heart and ceases to paint, even when his friends tell him it's not true.
The story continues with a trip with his mentor, the Sunbow Fairy, to the land of "I Can't." Here he meets the demons that each of us face when we get into that negative space in which we say, "I can't." Finally, the Sunbow Fairy challenges Orange to "Trust Himself." This is what we all do when we step up to the plate and risk making an attempt.
The Story of Orange is a fabulous book. I have focused on one very important message; however, the book has many. Too often children don't learn these important messages in school or at home. A delightful book about an orange zebra discusses these important messages in such a captivating way.
Because I am an elementary school counselor, I can attest to the fact that this wonderful little book is really an excellent example of biblio-therapy. Children who are struggling with self esteem issues will learn an incredible message by reading this delightful little book.

Can I Have Two Please??
I ordered this book for my mom, but when it came the cover looked so inviting I thought I would read a few pages, just to "see". I was hooked. I did not put it down until I was finished. Now I am going to order another one so that I have my own copy. Growing up in Santa Ana, it was fun reading about places I knew and I found myself trying to see if I recognized any of the characters! I am a lover of romance novels and not a great fan of mysteries but the combination of the two in this wonderful book has me hooked and wanting more. So Sylvia! Is there a sequel on the horizon?? I would be front and center waiting to order if there was. Thanks for a really great read.

Superb Psychological Thriller
BLOOD ORANGE is set in the home of my youth, Orange County, in the 1950's. The setting was so real, I could swear the aroma of orange blossoms filled my room. Turning page after scary page, I found myself engrossed in this spine-tingling psychological thriller. Those orange groves looked pretty scary to me, as a kid, and now I know they truly were a dangerous place - perfect for murder, mystery...and hair-raising adventure. Ms. Snyder's captivating cast of characters, led by a strong female heroine, wind their way through this very frightening tale. The ending is quite chilling, and I read it twice for double thrills! I look forward to further great reads from this author and heartily recommend BLOOD ORANGE.

Even Surgery Could Wait
BLOOD ORANGE A story of love, lust, Terror and death By Sylvia Snyder. I read BLOOD ORANGE In the waiting room of the hospital while my husband Hank was undergoing surgery down the hall. Even before I finished the prologue, I knew I was hooked. The hustle and bustle sounds of the hospital staff muted as I turned page after page after page. I never looked at my watch once. I got so engrossed in this psychological thriller that I was almost irritated when Dr. Taylor interrupted my reading to tell me my husband's surgery had been a success. I rushed to room 409, managing to finish BLOOD ORANGE and discover the identity of the murderer right before the nurses rolled Hank in from the recovery room. This book is a suspense novel full of terrifying clues left in a lush orange grove, leaving the reader constantly wondering which of the characters the murderer might be. Is it Mo who lusts for Celia? Is it Paul who is married to Celia? Is it Nat who flirts openly with Celia? And, who will be the next victim? Will it be Mo? Will it be Paul? Will it be Celia or one of her children? How could such terrible things happen in such a perfect neighborhood? "When along came a spider who sat down beside her..." If you fancy spiders, you'll love this book. If you detest spiders, you'll love this book. If you like strong happy endings, you'll devour this book. Sylvia Snyder has once again given us the gift of a great read.-- Lola D. Gillebaard is an author, an associate college professor, and a motivational humorist.

Through my mothers eyes
My mother lived in E. Orange during the 1906 to 1938 time period. She attended the Lincoln Elementary & E. O. High School along with my father whom she married later on. The postcards in this book give me a view that my mother would have seen as she grew up. This book gave me a warm and cozy feeling about a town I didnt know before. Many years later as I grew up in Caldwell, not far away, I had no idea of the rich history of E. O. Now I know thanks to this book. Note to Author: Don't ya just love Antique shops?

Fine little sliver of New Jersey history
This well researched and visually appealing book is worth leisurely perusal. A picture is indeed worth a thousand words.

A walk through my childhood
I can't remember when I've enjoyed a book so much! The postcards and narratives shown throughout the pages brought me back to the town I so loved and enjoyed as a child and teenager growing up in a city that I felt was the best place in the world.

Ed Emberley's Big Orange Drawing Book

learn to draw the easy way
This book is from a series of 4 books from Emberly are the easiest books on drawing there are, period. Anyone young or old can learn to draw some great critters and vehicles from these books. ANYONE! These are a great first step. All of his Big Color books are great, (They are a series, each named after a color). Famous for the easy way it shows you how to draw step by step, what appears to be a complex Haunted House, but it is simple when you do it his way. This book includes a number of fun ideas including robots, tiger, military ships, Halloween holiday drawings, and more. He even shows you how to make yours unique rather than a copy of his drawings. You can be the doodle hero of your classroom or office after using this book. He does it simply using very simple steps, lines, and basic shapes to start you off. My favorite in the series would be the Purple Book, because I am partial to the pirate ship instructions.

If you want to move up from here and learn the terminology of what you are doing, and really become an accomplished artist, the next step after these are the terrific books by "Jack Hamm".

If you just want to have some fun, get this book!

~*~ Ed Emberley is the man ~*~
I am a 21 year-old artist. I forgot all about Ed Emberley until a couple of weeks ago. Emberley was my first artistic inspiration and I developed an interest in art through the direction of his variety of juvenile instructional books. I highly recommend these books to any children who express an interest in art. His series of books are EXTREMELY simply to understand and children at any age can grasp his artistic expertise.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL OF ED EMBERLEY'S DRAWING BOOKS!
Believe it or not children's drawings end up looking much like Ed Emberley's. Line by line and shape by shape the Halloween related objects take form. Our other family favorite was Emberley's "Big Red Drawing Book". Absolutely love these books!

Magic Cancer Bullet: How a Tiny Orange Pill May Rewrite Medical History

The Inside Story
This is an excellent account of the way things really happen. The media sometimes beats the political drum so loudly about the pharmaceutical industry being an evil empire that the other side of the story is never heard. Here is an inside look from the perspective of dedicated scientists, committed business executives, and the people they serve. If you want to base your opinions on all aspects of the issue, this is required reading.

This book will offer you an inside view....
As an employee within the pharmaceutical industry, this book will offer the reader an inside view of how a product goes from the research phase to finally, the consumer. As a father to a child with cancer, this book offers hope that someday a cure will be developed to eliminate cancer. A must read!

Gleevec Book
As someone who has CML, the disease that Gleevec was developed for, and as someone for whom Gleevec has been a life-saver, I can attest to the the fact that this book is a valuable and interesting read.

This book makes note of the important part the internet played in the rapid FDA approval of this "proof of concept" drug. It also tells the personal story of how several persons that have used this drug lives' have been affected. Some parts of this book may bring tears to your eyes.

It is becoming apparent that Gleevec will be of help against several other diseases, besides just CML.

As a "proof of concept" drug, Gleevec is truly unique, promising and exciting, and that fact alone makes the telling of its story so worthwhile.

I am totally satisfied with this book, and am glad that I bought it.

Handy and Accurate
I've been using this handy reference book since the first edition in 1995. My kids and I have visited many of the places contained in the book. By and large, I agree with the author's assessment of each place we visited. I found the information provided on hours of operation, special program times and fees to be very accurate. The book really helped me expand my children's horizons as well as my own because we visited some great places we probably would have never known about without it.

Right on Target!...
Ms. Peterson's book was right on target for our extensive homeschooling needs...I was very pleeased with the easy layout & cross-referencing of the book. Sooooo many things to do and never enough time. We do unit studies and have found this gem of a book to be quite the treasure that we need to guide us on last minute field trip ideas, outtings, and just all-around fun! One thing always relates to another and i usually can include both children (9 & almost 15) in the same activities/events. I truly appreciate the effort Ms. Peterson has put into this book...I got it from my AAA club...and from one resourceful homeschooler to another (Ms. Peterson), I whole-heartedly THANK-YOU!...

Essential Guide for Homeschooling Parents or Teachers
Wonderful fieldtrip ideas - - we have gone on at least 50 outings based on this book's suggestions. We use this book at planning meetings to organize our calendar each year. Lots of wonderful activities for school-aged children. Details from the common destinations (zoos, public museums) to less common destinations (ex: lollipop and candy cane factories, Casa de Tortuga) and private museums (ex: the Holyland Exhibition). Our homeschooling experience has been enriched by this guidebook!

Rhymes With Orange: A Cartoon Collection
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (November, 1997)
Author: Hilary B. Price
Average review score:

Cartoons for Generation X-
This collection brings together some of Hilary Price's best comic strips. Written with an eye toward the 20-40 year old crowd, they deal with the humor in everyday subjects: dating/couplehood, work, cats and dogs, parents, holidays. Sometimes the cartoons are just quirky, but often Price hits on some universal truths. Those cartoons - poignant but funny - are the ones that end up on refrigerator doors, file cabinets, bulletin boards and, in my house, bathroom counters.

The Best Comics Around!
Rhymes With Orange Are Great Great Comics! And I happen to know Hillary B. Price! I've e-mailed her many times. I recomend this book to people who love good jokes!

The Price is Right
Hilary Price is one of the freshest voices the comic strip industry has seen in years. Her innocent, pastoral-like artwork blended with the diction and wit of an English major make for one of the best comic strips out there. A work of art.
